Discussion: Terror in Brussels

Thirty one are dead in Belgium after twin blasts struck Brussels’ Zaventem International Airport, before another bombing at Maelbeek metro station in the city center. As the city reels, it is clear that Europe’s fight against terrorism is set to continue for some time. Were the attacks in retaliation for the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, who was one of the suspects behind the Paris attacks? How should European governments tackle this problem, considering that heightened security efforts have been ineffective? How does the influx of migrants into Europe factor into the attacks, and is it unfair to link the two? Join us for a discussion of Europe’s anti-terror challenges, featuring Mr. Wang Yiwei, Director of the Center for EU Studies at Renmin University; and via satellite in Berlin, Mr. Henning Riecke, Head of the Transatlantic Relations Program at the German Council for Foreign Relations.
