On Monday a car carrying a couple hit a giant truck at a crossroad in Xiamen city, China, and was buried by the rubble falling from the truck. The man and woman were dug out by firefighters and police two hours later, but sadly both showed no signs of life. The young couple were both in their twenties and had only recently engaged. The car’s data recorder caught the moment of the accident.
In 2015 the World Health Organisation estimated that there are 200,000 road deaths in China annually. Professor Li Liping, director of the Injury Prevention Research Centre at Shantou University’s medical school previously told the South Morning Post that he attributed the number to the low standards of driving and the failure of the road network to keep up with the rapid increase in the number of cars in the country.
