El Nino may be behind heavy rainfall across southern China

Heavy rainfall has swept across southern China since March, with at least 10 significant rainstorms recorded so far. Experts say that in 1987 and 1998, China experienced widespread flooding after similar lengthy periods of heavy rainfall. The unusual weather patterns experienced over the past few months may have been caused by this year’s particularly strong El Nino conditions.
