The Turkish parliament has voted to extend a mandate allowing the army to carry out cross-border operations for another year. The extended mandate also allows US-led coalition forces to use Turkey’s military airbases and territorial air space in the fight against ISIL. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the country needs to continue its involvement in Syria and Iraq, due to their shared borders. Turkey started a ground operation in Syria last August, in a bid to clear ISIL fighters away from the border area.
