EU and Iraq meet to discuss Mosul’s future amid offensive

As the offensive to retake Mosul continues, EU officials and Iraqi authorities have met in Brussels to discuss the future of the Iraqi city. Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said he was counting on the support of the international community, and noted the fight is not only an Iraqi internal matter. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini stressed that the European bloc fully supports the Mosul campaign. She said protecting the civilian population is a priority. The focus will be on delivering humanitarian aid, as well as the removal of improvised explosive devices.
