EU lawmakers refuse to grant China MES

The EU has passed a non-legislative resolution against granting China market economy status (MES), in an overwhelming majority vote of 546 against 28 lawmakers. China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. Under the protocols of ascension, China should automatically have MES status by December 11 this year. Is this a move to protect trade, and how will this impact the EU’s relationship with its second largest trading partner?
