Family of Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis speaks to CNC

During the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1937 to 1945, China suffered great losses and its people lived a desperate life.

Helping hands extended by foreigners were extremely precious that Chinese people would never forget.

Indian physician Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis was one of them, he died while treating Chinese soldiers in 1942 and will be revered in China for his contribution forever.

Dr. Kotnis was one of the five Indian Physicians dispatched to China to provide medical assistance in 1938 during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

He was 28 at arrival, worked as a battle front doctor in a very hostile conditions. He treated hundreds of thousands of wounded Chinese soldiers.

Unfortunately, Dr.Kotnis died with epilepsy at the age of 32, left alone his Chinese wife and their three-month old son.

“Dr. Kotnis is a great fighter of internationalism, and he went all the way to help Chinese people, he worked very hard to help and teach Chinese soldiers and doctors. He unfortunately get sick in the cold weather. In a cold night he died right behind his wife, a Chinese nurse.”

Dr.Kotnis is also regarded as a symbol of friendship between China and India. The Chinese government keeps meeting the Kotnis’s family as a tradition till date.

Chinese president Xi Jinping awarded the family again Wednesday at Great Hall of the People in Beijing along with other veterans and foreigners for their dedications and humanitarian contributions to China.

“He should be more know to the younger generation, today younger generations I’ m probably not sure they are aware of Dr. Kotnis. China is doing a real lot on promoting Dr. Kotnis, and we know that a news movie is coming up, so we want to emplace on doctors that money is not the only thing, it is the services which is more important, and one must do his best.”
