Focus on territorial disputes ahead of Russia-Japan leaders’ meeting

As Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe prepares to meet with Russian President Putin later this week, the focus is on strained relations over a long-standing territorial dispute. Four islands in the Pacific Ocean were seized by the Soviet Union at the end of World War Two, and are still controlled by Moscow. The Kremlin has already indicated that the talks are unlikely to result in any serious progress over the disputed Kuril Islands.
