Foreigners in the Long March: Otto Braun, the German who made history in China

Otto Braun, the German communist who once served as a military commander in the CPC in the 1930s, has long been a controversial figure in history. The man’s disastrous command almost destroyed the Red Army, however he helped the embattled CPC escape the Kuomintang’s Fifth Encirclement Campaign by advising the initiation of what later came to be known as the Long March.
