Helmut Schmidt, former Chancellor of West Germany died at age of 96 at his home in Hamburg, German media reported on Tuesday.
He served as Chancellor from 1974 to 1982.
International leaders paid tribute to the former West German leader for his contributions to post-war European integration.
Known as “an old friend of the Chinese people,” Schmidt was also a pioneer and promoter of Sino-German relations.
In an interview with Xinhua, he once said quote, “I am a friend of China and follow the development of China with great attention.”
Since his first visit to China in 1975, he visited China more than 10 times.
