Former Portuguese PM Guterres to become next UN secretary-general

The former Portuguese prime minister and the former head of the UN refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, was unanimously selected on Wednesday by the UN Security Council as the next UN secretary-general, succeeding incumbent UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on Jan. 1, 2017, Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who is the Council president for October, announced at the UN Headquarters in New York.
