Former US defense chiefs on China-US ties

Four former U.S. defense secretaries on Monday encouraged the United States and China to boost military exchanges in a bid to build more trust between the two countries.

The four former defense secretaries, Chuck Hagel, William Cohen, William Perry, and Harold Brown, made the remarks at an event held by National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

Cohen, who served as the Pentagon chief from 1997 to 2001, proposed that the two militaries could conduct more joint exercises, adding that it is “a way of trying to build more trust” between the two sides.
