France’s socialist government has survived a no-confidence vote after bypassing parliament to force through a labor reform bill. Protesters are taking to the streets to demonstrate against the reforms. The government has defended the changes, saying that they aim to make France more competitive in the global market. The bill is designed to cut France’s high unemployment rate and give employers more power to make working hours flexible. But protesters say the reform bill will make it easier to lay off workers, weaken union powers, and relax the rules regulating the country’s 35-hour work week.
