Be it the frenzy of the cricket world cup, or the heated political discourse of the Delhi and Bihar elections, or the show of solidarity during the Chennai rains, the one platform where India gathered to make its voice heard was the Twitter. Here’s a look at the most popular hashtags and the top trending tweets that defined the year 2015. The Delhi elections saw the country fervently discuss the charged election atmosphere, with over 10.8 million election related tweets on #DelhiElections and #DelhiVotes. And when citizens in Chennai and Tamil Nadu needed help, India again took to Twitter to provide aid and spread love. Nearly 1.4 million tweets were amassed on #ChennaiRains, #ChennaiFloods and #ChennaiRainsHelp. Amongst the other most talked about events were the Indian Premier League (IPL) with over nine million votes and Prime Minister’s #SelfieWithDaughter campaign with 3, 75,000 tweets and #Bihar Results garnering over 2,60,000 tweets on polling day. In a first, a non-US brand – Make in India got its own emoji. Interestingly, the Taj Mahal, a historical Indian monument made a spectacular debut on Twitter this year. As the year nears its end, Twitter continues to showcase India’s rise on a global platform.
