Get Real: Cambodia’s Orphanage Tourism

In this episode, Get Real goes undercover and visits orphanages in Cambodia and discovers a myriad of troubling stories.

Rith was ten when he and his five-year-old sister Chea moved into an orphanage in Phnom Penh. Instead of receiving care, both Rith and Chea were often beaten by the orphanage director.

Children are deliberately kept in destitute conditions, in order to tug at the heartstrings of tourists and volunteers who visit the orphanages. This “business” is so profitable that the number of orphanages shot up by 75 in just five years (from 2005 to 2010).
