China’s Tibetan Plateau, which is one of the world’s ice storehouses, is under threat by global warming. In order to assess the retreat of glaciers in the region, scientists from five countries conducted a joint expedition in September and October to drill ice cores into the ice sheet. Scientists need to ship equipment and supplies from the base camp to the drilling point, which is not an easy task. So what challenges will the scientists face and how will they solve them?
