Global media shocked by China’s Singles’ Day shopping spree

Foreign media outlets were quite surprised over Wednesday’s online shopping spree. Chinese “e-retailer,” Alibaba, announced that its merchandise sales exceeded 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion US dollars) within the day’s first twelve minutes, beginning at midnight Beijing time. The British magazine, The Economist, pointed out that Alibaba reported more than 57 billion yuan (9 billion US dollars) in sales during last year’s Singles’ Day, far more than the 9.5 billion yuan (1.5 billion US dollars) on the US’s “Black Friday.”
