Lebanese militant group and political party Hezbollah said one of its top commanders Mustafa Badreddine has been killed in a “big explosion” in Syria. A statement issued by Hezbollah early Friday morning said Badreddine, one of the leaders overseeing the group’s military operations in Syria, was killed near Damascus airport. Reports were mixed as to when the senior member passed away. A Hezbollah member of the parliament said Israel was behind the killing, adding that the group would respond “at the appropriate time”. The death of Badreddine is Hezbollah’s biggest blow since the 2008 killing of its top military chief Imad Mughniyeh.
