How exactly can quantum physics be applied in communications? Starting with information processing, in normal silicon computer chips, real-world information is converted into digital data, which is rendered in either one of two states: 0 or 1. In quantum computers, digital data can exist in both states simultaneously, regardless of distance. That greatly increases the amount of digital data that can held. China’s quantum satellite will beam individual entangled quantum particles between space and ground stations. According to the project team, such communication methodology could be applied in about 10 years in fields including online banking and military affairs.
