Thousands have been evacuated to safety as Hurricane Matthew made landfall on Haiti’s western peninsula early on Tuesday. According to the US National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Matthew struck at 7 a.m. local time near Les Anglais. Officials reported that more than 6,000 residents have been moved into temporary shelters across the region. With winds of up to 230 kilometers per hour, the Category Four storm has already killed one person and damaged hundreds of homes as it pounded coastal villages.
