India approves scheme to insure farms against crop failures

India has approved a 1.3 billion US dollar scheme to insure farms against crop failures that have driven thousands of farmers in the country to take their own lives. Under the new insurance program, farmers paying premiums amounting to around 1.5 percent of a crops’ value can be insured for the full value if destroyed by drought or flood.
