India’s capital city Delhi is proposing to make public transport free for women. If implemented, this could be the first such women-centric policy anywhere in the world. The state government says the scheme will make it safer for women to travel. Delhi’s public buses are considered unsafe for women after sunset and many shun the city’s metro railway because of its high fares, despite its round-the-clock security and female guards at every station. Official data show that 40% of all rapes reported in India happen in Delhi.
