During this year’s Two Sessions, President Xi Jinping vowed to “unswervingly encourage, support and guide the country’s private sector and create a favorable environment for such companies”. In that speech he laid out principles for how private enterprises should maintain relations with both the government and SOEs. CPPCC member Bai Chong’en, a member of China’s central bank monetary policy committee, was there when President Xi delivered his speech. We sat down for a chat with him about that meeting, and the challenges and opportunities facing China’s private sector.
