A coalition of Iraqi army and Kurdish peshmerga fighters have launched an offensive to retake Mosul and deal a ‘death blow’ to ISIL. The city, Iraq’s second largest, has been under ISIL control for more than two years, and is the group’s de facto capital. An estimated 4,000 to 8,000 ISIL fighters remain in the city.
