The battle to drive out so-called Islamic State militants out of the centre of Iraq’s Ramadi entered the second day on Wednesday. Iraq’s armed forces began advancing on Tuesday on the last district held by the militants in the centre of Ramadi, a Sunni Muslim-dominated city on the river Euphrates some 100 km west of Baghdad that they captured in May. It was the government’s biggest defeat since IS militants swept through areas in the country’s north and west, including Iraq’s second-largest city of Mosul, in the summer of 2014.
