Iraqi forces open second front for Mosul assault

Iraqi forces have opened a second front to prepare for an assault in Mosul, a day after government troops declared victory over the militants in Fallujah. Mosul, Islamic State’s de facto capital, is Iraq’s largest northern city. Government troops cleared two villages and pressed around 20 kilometers west of Baiji. However, the government troops on a separate front have made little progress in the past three months. The dusty weather has also made it difficult for them to advance or target the militants.
