Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has announced that the international coalition will start its operation to retake the country’s second largest city of Mosul from Islamic State. The operation of security forces and allied US-led coalition troops will be the biggest in the country since US troops withdrew from Iraq in 2011. Mosul, the last major ISIS stronghold in Iraq, has been under the group’s control since June 2014, when Iraqi government forces abandoned their weapons and fled, enabling ISIS militants to take control of parts of Iraq’s northern and western regions.
