Iraqi security forces have retaken control of a government compound in Shirqat from ISIL militants, as a stepping stone in the campaign to recapture the armed group’s stronghold of Mosul. The operation was launched on Tuesday, backed by mostly Shiite paramilitary and air support from the US-led coalition. Shirqat lies some 280 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Tens of thousands of civilians are thought to have been trapped in Shirqat and its surrounding villages, which have been under ISIL control since the group seized a third of Iraqi territory in 2014. CCTV’s Michal Bardavid reports on the victory.
