Ireland marks the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, a rebellion against British rule that paved the way for independence. Irish President Michael D. Higgins, who laid a wreath at Kilmainham Gaol where the 16 rebel leaders were executed after the six-day revolt, said the country has come a long way in the past 100 years. Around 5,000 relatives of the rebels have been invited to the parade, which will involve up to 2,500 members of the Irish armed forces and a 21-gun salute.
