ISIL suffers major setback in Syria and Iraq

ISIL has met strong resistance and setbacks in the year since it declared a cross-border “caliphate” last June. In Syria, Kurdish forces defended the Syrian town of Kobane and retook the key hub of Tal Abyad on the Turkish border this month. And in Iraq, Kurds defended their autonomous region, gained control of a swathe of territory and restored areas they lost to the jihadists.
