Islamic State fighters are reported to have driven Syrian government forces from a town in the west of the country on Sunday. The fighting escalated amid a flurry of diplomatic activity and talks between regional rivals. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Islamic State militants took the town of Maheen in the southwest of Homs province in a fierce assault that began by detonating two suicide car bombs.
