Islamic State storms Syrian hospital

Islamic State has attacked a hospital in Deir al-Zour, and seized territory on the edge of the eastern Syrian city which is still partly controlled by the government. ISIL’s Amaq news agency says its fighters stormed the Assad Hospital and took control of a checkpoint, a fire station and university accommodation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that at least 20 members of Syrian government forces and around six Islamic State militants were killed in the fighting. ISIL has reportedly detained medical staff and taken some government soldiers prisoner. Fierce clashes between government forces and ISIL are ongoing after militants launched a dawn attack on the southwestern edge of Deir-al-Zour.
