Japan: Protesters & police scuffle as country returns to nuclear power

Several protesters scuffled with police as they railed against restarting the ‘No. 1’ nuclear reactor at the Kyushu Electric Power Co. plant in Sendai, Kagoshima, Tuesday. On Monday, company officials announced that a full safety check of the radioactive rods had taken place ahead of its potential reactivation. The reactor is set to be brought online later that day.

The Sendai ‘No. 1’ reactor has been inactive since May 2011 when it was closed following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The unit was shut down due to safety concerns by the NRA in September 2014.
