Japanese government seeks record military budget for fiscal 2017

Japan’s Defense Ministry will seek a record budget of 5.16 trillion yen, or more than 50 billion US dollars, for the 2017 fiscal year – a 2.3 percent increase on last year’s budget. The move would be the fifth successive annual increase. A government source said they are keen to stiffen the country’s defenses as neighboring Democratic People’s Republic of Korea upgrades its ballistic missile capabilities.
