Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi wins Nobel Prize for cellular research

Japanese microbiologist Yoshinori Ohsumi has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. The 71-year-old Ohsumi was honored for his research into how the body’s cells detoxify and repair themselves. A disruption in this cell mechanism has been linked to a number of diseases like Parkinson’s, diabetes and cancer. The Nobel assembly at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute hopes that Ohsumi’s work will pave the way for new developments into treating these diseases.
