In Japan, online retail giant Rakuten and Walmart’s Seiyu are set to open a new logistics site in Yokohama to cope with growing sales from their online supermarket business. In 2018, the two companies got together to open an online grocery delivery service — sales in late 2019 were up 30%. Internet grocery shopping has been slow to take off in Japan, as consumers are more accustomed to shopping daily for fresh produce. However, change in the market is expected due to a growing number of working women, as well as advancements in technology and logistics networks.
