Jiangsu Province hit by more than 1,000 tornadoes since 1956

Local authorities in east China’s Jiangsu say the death toll in the tornado-struck province has climbed to 98. Many houses collapsed because of the gales, and villages were levelled. Trees and utility poles were uprooted, while motor vehicles were blown away. Meteorological records show that Jiangsu Province reported a total of 1,070 tornadoes in the 50 years ending in 2005, with an average of more than 21 tornadoes each year. Most of them took place in June, July and August.
