Juvenile Rapist To Be Free ; Nirbhaya’s Parents Hope For Justice

With just three days remaining for the convicted juvenile in the Nirbhaya rape case to walk out free from the remand home, Nirbhaya’s parents hope that the Centre and the court would extend his period of detention. “The High Court is well aware of what kind of impression it may leave on the society if he (the juvenile) is let free. I have full faith that whatever decision the Delhi high Court takes, it will be right for the society,” said Nirbhayas mother. Meanwhile, sources say that the government may be mulling to invoke Section 6 of the Juvenile Justice Act, which stated that any juvenile indicted for a deranged act could be further placed for monitoring for two more years. In 2012, the juvenile, who was under 18 when he was arrested for rape and murder of Nirbhaya, as the victim came to be known as in public, was tried under the Juvenile Justice Act. He was ordered to keep in a remand home for three years and is set to be released this month.
