A RTI reply has revealed that the Karnataka state government has spent ₹50 Cr. for assembly sessions in Belagavi over the past 5 years. This expenditure comes amidst a string of farmer suicides in the state. The reply has revealed that the government spent the amount on the accommodation of its MLAs in the five assembly sessions conducted in Belagavi. The Monsoon session has had a stormy start with the opposition turning the heat on the Siddaramaiah government on farmers’ Nirtika yes

suicides. The government has been accused of being “irresponsible” and “careless” in addressing the issues concerning peasants. The opening day of the session was marred by protests by a united opposition over the government’s alleged failure, which BJP leader Jagadish Shettar said had left the farmers with no other option but to take the extreme step. Meanwhile, farmers in Karnataka have taken to streets protesting against the government, alleging the government of neglecting them.
