US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov have met in Geneva to forge a nationwide truce in Syria on Friday. The discussion of the two sides aims to reduce violence, expand humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people and move towards a political solution to end the five-year-long civil war. Washington wants concrete steps from Russia to force President Bashar al-Assad to implement a ceasefire and lift the siege of the city of Aleppo, while Russia wants closer military cooperation with the US in the battle against militant groups in Syria.
