Kid’s fingers ‘bitten’ by escalator raises safety concerns in China

A one-year-old girl in China had five fingers crushed after accidentally getting them stuck in an escalator. The shocking incident occurred in a shopping hall in Beijing on March 20. Whilst playing the toddler tried to walk up escalator going down and fell onto it, causing her fingers to be trapped between the escalator steps and crushed .
The accident follows two high profile escalator related deaths last year of a four year-old boy who became wedged under an escalator handrail at a metro station, and a woman who died when she fell through an escalator landing. In 2014, a report by the country’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), found that more than 110,000 escalators had potential safety issues. The AQSIQ said there were 49 escalator accidents in 2014 that claimed a total of 37 lives.
