Kupukupu Malam: Indonesia’s Night Butterflies

Kupukupu Malam is Channel NewsAsia’s web-exclusive documentary that explores the flesh trade in Indonesia. In the local language, kupukupu malam literally means “night butterfly” but the term is also used as a reference to sex workers. In our three-part special, Channel NewsAsia’s Indochina correspondent Pichayada Promchertchoo travels to Jakarta, Surabaya, Subang and Baturraden to investigate the thriving sex market, as the government under President Joko Widodo‬ wages an aggressive battle against prostitution in order to end the flesh trade by 2019.
