While speaking to TIMES NOW, Salil Shetty, Secretary General of the human rights organization Amnesty International who works on the United Nation’s Millennium Development goals said that there have been incredible achievements and has brought the countries together giving it a push. While talking about the sustainable development goals and how they have given the countries a push Shetty said that there are few deficits as well to the millennium development goal. “Firstly, we still have lot of people living in poverty, still suffering from ill health, disease, illiteracy. Almost third of the population in many countries is still left behind. So sustainable development goal is big and that leaves no one behind,” said Shetty. “Secondly the accountability was problematic, Government’s come and make pacts, but what happens on the ground? What about the tangible benefits for people who are at the bottom of the pyramid? The other dimension is trying to take a more comprehensive approach. Because the focus on million development goal was poverty eradication but economic growth and infrastructure was seen different,” added Shetty. The Amnesty international Secretary General further said that there are lots of challenges at the implementation stage but the good thing is that we are seeing it together because at the end economic growth has to benefit.
