The United Nations could run out of money by the end of the month as it faces a near-unprecedented funding crisis. Almost a third of UN member states have not paid their annual dues. The shortage of cash has meant vital staff vacancies have been left empty, travel was limited to all but essential journeys, and meetings deferred amid attempts to shore up the dwindling reserves. The staff has been warned there may be a default on salaries in November. The U.S. is responsible for more than 22 percent of the 2019 budget ( 3.3 billion U.S. dollars) but currently owes 674 million dollars for this budget and around 381 million from earlier budgets.
