Meritocracy works well for China: analyst

“Meritocracy” works well for China: analyst

SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH)DANIEL BELL, Tsinghua University professor
I think most people in the West think that the only ideal for China is “one person, one vote” and that’s the ultimate way of judging a system. But I think no, we need to have different standards — broader standards that are both better in terms of thinking that China actually prospers in the way we deal with things and also the best thing lies in China’s political culture, and I think some combination of meritocracy at the upper levels and democracy at the lower levels is a better standard of judging political progress rather than just using purely democratic standards.
