Merkel says Germany-Turkey ties strong despite “genocide” vote

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stressed that Turkey and Germany have common interests, following Turkey’s furious reaction to the American genocide resolution. Standing next to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Berlin, Merkel said ties between Germany and Turkey remain strong. Earlier on Thursday, German parliament approved a resolution recognizing the World War I-era killings of Anatolian Armenians at the hands of Ottomans as “genocide.” Turkish government described the resolution as “null and void”.
