In Mexico, Sunday’s regional elections have posed a major test for the country’s ruling party as it looks to hold onto the presidency in 2018 in the face of public discontent over corruption and gang violence. Polls suggest it will be difficult for the ruling party to defend all nine of the 12 governorships it currently holds, which could spell trouble for the party’s prospects in Mexico’s 2018 presidential election.
