Milan and Rome ban cars as pollution rises

In Milan and Rome, cars were partially banished from the streets on Monday, as Italy battles a build-up of health-threatening pollution caused by freakishly dry and warm winter weather. Rome announced last Thursday that all vehicles will be restricted to use on alternating days, depending on the last number of their license plates. Milan imposed a total ban on private cars for three days from Monday during 10a.m. to 4p.m. The public has generally responded well to the measures.
