Miss China pageant held in Costa Rica to highlight Chinese culture

The China Association of Costa Rica came to the foro Tuesday night in San Jose, as the Miss China Pageant 2015 was held to promote and develop Chinese culture in this Central American country.

Eight candidates displayed their beauty and elegance before some 450 Chinese and Costa Rican guests.

Besides regular show of body and figure, the lucky girls also told stories about the friendship and life experience that they had gained in this Caribbean paradise.

The President of the China Association Wan Lili told Xinhua that the event aimed to keep alive the Chinese traditions and values, unite all the Chinese people in Costa Rica, and promote their exchange with local people.

Between 17 and 23 years old, most of the participants could speak Spanish, Chinese or Cantonese. All of them were direct descendants of Chinese families and born in Costa Rica.

In the end, Joseling Huang Barrantes was crowned as the new queen and will represent Costa Rica in the Central America regional contest to be held later this year in Honduras.

Chinese people first arrived in Costa Rica in 1855 and their total number has now surpassed 50,000, making up one percent of the national population, and mainly employed in the fields of catering service and commerce.
