Movers Risk Danger To Help Abused Wives Escape Spouses

In Japan, “night moving shops” do more than just shift your furniture – they help people vanish overnight. While they have been usually tied to helping the desperate slip past loan sharks and mobsters, Miho Saita’s company helps women escape from their abusive husbands.

According to official figures, 1 in 3 women are victims of domestic abuse in Japan. But less than 3% report their perpetrators to the police. For Miho, who was a victim of domestic abuse, she sees this not just as a business.

“We start off as clients but end up as equals and friends. If I said it in a nice way, I think I’m helping others,” she says.
